Not just on a technical level, that’s a perfectly understandable failing, but also in terms of imagination. Rendered in striking black and white these sequences feature throughout the game, and cleverly manage to imply that Alice’s mundane experiences in the real world are inspiring the more bizarre encounters in Wonderland.The plot itself is long-winded though and the attempts to mimic Lewis Carroll’s dialogue fall predictably short. Apparently a failed movie adaption is the reason for the decade long gap between the two games, but in all that time very little has changed in terms of its mix of simple platforming and only marginally more complex combat.The new game opens in Victorian London, with Alice being nursed by an immediately suspicious psychiatrist, who isobsessed with helping people forget memories. In the modern era though realism (or at least a Hollywood version of it) is king and the number of big budget Western games trying to subvert this trend, particularly while sporting an 18-certificate, are exceedingly small.Long in the tooth gamers may recognise this as a sequel to 2000’s American McGee’s Alice. In times past, when Japan held greater sway in the industry, a healthy dose of surrealism came as standard for almost every game. Going crazy is becoming a lost art in video games.
